Spring Walks in Llandudno from The Esplanade Hotel

26/3/26

Llandudno in North Wales offers some of the best spring walking in the UK, from easy promenade strolls to coastal headland trails. The top walks in Llandudno include the Llandudno Promenade (2 miles, easy), the Great Orme Summit via Haulfre Gardens (3.5 miles, moderate), the Great Orme Coastal Path (4 miles, easy to moderate), the Little Orme and Penrhyn Bay loop (3 miles, moderate), and Conwy Mountain (5 miles, challenging). Spring is the ideal season to explore Llandudno, with fewer crowds, fresh sea air, and spectacular views across the bay and into Snowdonia. The Esplanade Hotel, located right on the Llandudno promenade, is the perfect base for your walking break.

1. Llandudno Promenade Walk

Distance: 2 miles (out and back) | Time: 45 to 60 minutes | Difficulty: Easy

The Llandudno promenade is one of the finest in the UK, and spring is the perfect time to enjoy it. Stretching along the North Shore, it runs from the pier all the way to the foot of the Great Orme. The flat, wide path is ideal for all ages and abilities, including push chairs, wheelchairs, and dogs, who are all equally welcome.

As you walk, you'll take in the sweep of the bay, the colourful Victorian architecture, and views out across the Irish Sea. On a clear spring morning, you can even spot the mountains of Snowdonia in the distance. It's one of those simple pleasures that never gets old.

Starting or finishing at The Esplanade Hotel means you're right at the heart of the promenade, perfectly placed to head out for a walk before breakfast, or to come back and put your feet up after one.

2. Great Orme Summit via the Haulfre Gardens Trail

Distance: 3.5 miles (loop) | Time: 1.5 to 2 hours | Difficulty: Moderate

The Great Orme is one of the most iconic landmarks in North Wales, and walking to the top is one of the best things to do in Llandudno. This route takes you up through the peaceful Haulfre Gardens and follows the hillside path to the summit, offering spectacular views over the town, the bay, and beyond.

In spring, the Great Orme comes alive with wildflowers, and if you're lucky, you might spot the famous Kashmiri goats that roam freely across the headland. There's also a good chance of seeing early butterflies and nesting seabirds along the clifftops.

The path has some inclines, so comfortable footwear is recommended. Once at the top, there's a café and visitor centre where you can refuel before heading back down. The views alone make every step worth it.

3. Great Orme Coastal Path (Marine Drive)

Distance: 4 miles (loop) | Time: 2 to 2.5 hours | Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

For something a little different, the Marine Drive coastal path circles the entire Great Orme headland at a lower level. This route hugs the cliff edge, offering dramatic sea views throughout, with waves crashing against the rocks below.

It's a largely flat walk with a few gentle climbs, and the scenery changes at almost every turn. You'll pass rocky outcrops, open grassland, and quiet coves that feel a world away from the town centre. Spring in Llandudno means fewer crowds, too, so you can really take your time and soak it all in.

The walk starts near the bottom of the Marine Drive toll road and can easily be combined with a visit to the Great Orme summit for a longer day out.

4. Little Orme and Penrhyn Bay

Distance: 3 miles (loop) | Time: 1 to 1.5 hours | Difficulty: Moderate

Fewer visitors make it out to the Little Orme, which makes it one of Llandudno's hidden gems. Located at the eastern end of the bay, this smaller headland offers a quieter, more rugged walking experience with big rewards.

The path climbs steadily from Penrhyn Bay up onto the ridge, where you're treated to sweeping views across Llandudno Bay and back towards the Great Orme. On a clear spring day, it's one of the most beautiful spots in North Wales.

The terrain is uneven in places, so sturdy shoes are a good idea. But the peace up here, with little more than birdsong and the sea breeze for company, makes it well worth the effort.

5. Conwy Mountain from Llandudno Junction

Distance: 5 miles (loop) | Time: 2.5 to 3 hours | Difficulty: Challenging

For those looking for more of a challenge and a chance to explore what's on in Llandudno's wider area, Conwy Mountain is just a short drive away and offers some of the best walking in North Wales. The route climbs up through the heathland and over the rocky ridge to the Iron Age hillfort at the summit.

The views from the top take in Conwy Castle, the estuary, Anglesey, and the Snowdonia mountains. It's a proper hike, but the sense of achievement and the scenery are hard to beat. Spring is a wonderful time to do this walk, with heather just beginning to bloom and the hills looking their greenest.
